Why This Matters

Why the FCPS Math Structure Matters

1

Two tracks at every grade

FCPS runs two math tracks at every elementary grade: Standard and Advanced (AAP). Advanced covers content one grade level above the Virginia SOL standard.

2

Major impact on middle school

Completing the advanced (AAP) track through 6th grade opens the path to Algebra I before 8th grade — which leads to AP Calculus AB/BC in high school.

3

AAP placement is renewed annually

Getting into AAP isn't permanent — it's re-evaluated every year. Daniel Math Academy supports both initial placement and ongoing retention.

FAQ

FCPS operates two math tracks at every grade. Standard math follows the grade-level Virginia SOL. Advanced/AAP math covers content one grade above — a 3rd grader in the advanced track studies 4th grade SOL content.

AAP (Advanced Academic Programs) is FCPS's enrichment program — similar in concept to a gifted education center. Eligible students attend full-time at a designated AAP center school, or receive part-time (Level III) services at their home school.

Check the class schedule sent at the start of the school year, or look at your child's courses in ParentVUE. If the course name says 'Advanced Math' or lists a higher grade level (e.g., 'Math 4' for a 3rd grader), your child is in the advanced track.

The Virginia SOL (Standards of Learning) test is a state-level standardized assessment. All students in grades 3–8 take the SOL test each spring. Results factor into school accountability and, in some cases, promotion decisions.
